9 Reasons Most People Fail (And How to Avoid Them)

Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

Have you ever looked at people around, saw their empty, soulless faces, and wondered: why did they fail?

Why do most of us die with regret, misery, and unfulfilled dreams? Why does the majority of humanity conform to rules and standards that make their life worse and kill their dreams?

In this article, I want to explore the 9 main reasons most people fail in life, and how you can avoid making the same deadly mistakes.

1: They Have No Direction

Lack of purpose is the primary reason people fail in life.

The deadliest mistake most people make that causes them to fail is lack of purpose and direction. They have no Life Mission, no meaning, no reason to live and achieve. For this reason, they don’t know what to do and how to live to live happily.

Uncertainty scares people, for it signifies danger and potential threats for one’s life. Instead of doing something about lack of meaning in their lives, most individuals allow external forces to tell them what to do. After all, it’s much safer, you don’t have to make difficult decisions, and they pick a road where you’ll be fulfilled and satisfied. Right?

No. Look at people around: they aren’t happy or fulfilled. They have empty eyes that tell anyone who looks into them: I do not live, but merely exist.

Follow the conventional advice, never think for yourself, and you’ll end up exactly where most people are: in their bedrooms where they smoke weed and watch porn 3 times a day.

If you want to live a happy life, however, you need to find the meaning of your life, or create it by yourself. Sense of purpose will give you a direction, a reason to move forward, and help you crush any obstacles that stand in your way.

2: They Take The Easy Path And Fail

Take the easy path, and you're guaranteed to fail in life.

People love it when it’s easy. They love it when all problems go away themselves, and when all they have to do is live hedonistic lifestyles full of mindlessness and degeneracy.

Sure, smoking weed, going partying on the weekend, and watching porn daily can bring you some pleasure, but that’s it. Going down the easy path, although seems fun in the short run, will absolutely ruin your life later as you live it more.

Listen. Life is suffering. No matter how much you try to escape pain, it will still reach you. Pain and suffering are simply inevitable.

If you want to have a good life, you need to pick the road less travelled. You need to pick a harder route, a route of discomfort and adversity. Even though walking down this road is uncomfortable now, it makes your life amazing in the long term.

Doing easy things makes life hard. Doing hard things makes life easy. Embrace challenge, build better habits, and love the grind.

3: They Are Afraid Of What Others Think

Don't be afraid of what people think, for most of them fail in life.

Ooooh, the main weakness of many people: desire to be accepted. As we evolved to be social creatures, we desire community, love, and support from others to feel safe.

If you ever wondered why people fear societal rejection as if it guaranteed death, it’s because it actually did so thousands of years ago. If you behaved badly and your tribe didn’t like you, they would expell you into the wild, where you would die from starvation or predator.

Although we can now live safely without relying on communities to survive, or brains haven’t changed significantly since those times. We still associate being alone and disliked with death, and try to avoid these things by fitting in.

Yes, being around average people will make you feel safer, but that’s about it. You will follow trends you don’t want to follow, work on the job you hate, and buy stuff you don’t need to impress people that don’t even like you.

It will sound horrible, but to live a great life, you need to face your fear of being alone. You need to temporarily become the loner, “the weird one”, and embrace the grind. It will be hard in the short term, but in the long term, you will live happily, while most people will fail.

4: They Always Blame And Complain

Only people who fail complain on a constant basis. Don't be like them.

People don’t like to admit they’re wrong. They don’t like to be faced with judgement about their own mistakes and shortcomings. To hide their insecurities and run away from admitting that they’re wrong, people often blame others for their failures.

They whine about how their disfunctional families caused them to become drug addicts (even though it was their own decision), about how governments don’t support them enough (maybe you should fucking learn to support yourself first?), or how X did Y and Z.

No, the government or your family aren’t the main reason you fucking wasted your life. It is you. You are the main reasons you live a shitty life, and unless you want to continue being depressed and see your life deteriorate even more, you must admit it.

Take responsibility for your life, and recognize that your choices are more powerful than what other people do to you. Before blaming someone else like a little bitch, calm down and look at what mistakes you could’ve done yourself. Fix these mistakes, learn from them, and move on.

This may seem like basic, overused, and cliché advice. If that’s the case, though, why do most people fail and never follow it? Why do they keep being victims on a voluntary basis?

No matter how obvious the advice seems, follow it. Give yourself a promise that from now on you’ll never blame anyone else again.

5: They Lack Discipline And Consistency

Shift your expectations, for if you don't, you'll be one of the people who fail in life.

We live in the world of instant gratification. We live in the day and age when people don’t want to work for anything, and want to skip to the harvesting part instead.

“Get it NOW! Lose weight NOW! Buy it NOW, or it will go away!”

Marketers and advertisers abuse this part of human psychology like North Korean leaders abuse their citizens on a regular basis. Even though it increases their income and helps them achieve more in life, it slows down other people.

Unwillingness to change expectations and go through the necessary process of disciplined work is why many start, but only a few reach their destination. Few people achieve massice success, because only a few are willing to work and do what it takes.

If you want to be one of the few, learn how to be disciplined. Learn how to build good habits, do focused work, and be consistent. Remember: doing hard things makes life easy. Suffer now, so that a year from now, you live with freedom and fulfillment.

6: They Fail Because They Give Power Away

Practice non-conformity. Do what you want, not what society expects from you.

Most people live for nothing. They merely exist, consume, shit, and die, and only a few people will ever remember them.

As horrible as it sounds, it is absolutely true: people conform to higher authority that only cares about itself, and suffer their whole lives as a result.

Listen. If you allow external influences and powers to dictate who you are, what you’re capable of, and how you’re supposed to make decisions, you’ll benefit them, not yourself. You’ll make corporations richer, and their owners happier, at the expense of yourself.

Wake up, life’s too short to waste on obeying commands that you don’t want to follow. Shut the noise out, cultivate power and confidence through self-discipline, and use it to achieve stuff YOU, and not somebody else, desire to achieve.

7: They Procrastinate And Avoid What’s Necessary

Stop procrastinating, because if you don't, you'll waste your life.

Procrastination is a major issue, and only a few manage to overcome it. Most people decide to indulge in pleasure now instead of dealing with the issue immediately. Such procrastination compounds over time and destroys their chances of succeeding.

Laziness isn’t that hard to beat though. The process is only difficult at the start, but once you gain momentum, you achieve more and more while outperforming all your peers.

Living with laziness may seem attractive and appealing, but it is a trap that must be avoided at all costs. If you don’t want to waste your life and hate yourself, kill your laziness before it kills you.

Do necessary tasks immediately, and for a short period of time, discard all futile activities that bring meaningless pleasure. Focus on self-improvement, try your best to be productive 100% of the day, and stay consistent to achieve your goals.

8: They Lack Courage

Build courage to do big things by doing little things right.

Facing your fears, pursuing your dreams, overcoming obstacles, going against the crowd, and even creating an amazing life – all of these things are scary. People don’t want to dive deep into the unknown and face challenges they haven’t faces before.

Listen. Fear is a natural feeling, and you shouldn’t feel ashamed for experiencing it. However, you must face your fears and go through the process with courage and boldness.

If you manage to break through fear and step on the journey, on the other side of this mental barrier you will acquire everything you ever wanted: freedom, great relationships, and success.

But you know what? These things aren’t even that significant in comparison to this award. The main award is the person you’ll become, and the fulfillment that you’ll get from going through the transformation.

Before you amass courage to do big things, you must first gain confidence in doing little things right. Quit your bad habits, complete small but uncomfortable tasks, and build momentum.

Once you see that you truly have potential and achieve great results, you will gain courage necessary to build the life you want to live.

9: They Make Excuses

Stop making excuses, or you'll fail like most people do.

Finally, the last major reason most people fail in life is that they constantly make excuses. They try to make up reasons about why they supposedly can’t achieve a certain goal, or start pursing it.

People often make different excuses, such as “I don’t have time”, “I don’t have the right connections”, or “I’m too weak for this.”

Listen. Excuses that pop up in your mind are merely a coping mechanism that your brain uses to avoid doing the necessary work. It wants to avoid having to experience discomfort and fatigue at the expense of your dreams and wellbeing.

Aside from this, remember that the right moment doesn’t exist. There will never be time when the conditions will be perfect, and if there will be such time, it will be in your old years when you’ll have trouble even getting out of bed.

Whatever it is that you want to do, do it now. Bravely dive into the unknown and work on your endeavor. You will see that your previous excuses are invalid, and that you are capable of achieving success, dspite what your brain and society tell you.

Learn how to overcome limiting beliefs and live life to the fullest. It will pay off massively later.

How to Avoid Their Fate

Go on monk mode, cut off contact with toxic people, and embrace the grind.

I breifly told you ways you can avoid doing the 9 deadly mistakes, but still decided to add a separate section that explains how not to fail in life.

Find your purpose in life, create a plan to complete it, and dedicate your whole life to it. Take the harder path, build discipline, do the little things right, and consistently move closer towards achieving your goals.

Stand up for what you believe is right, and don’t let society convince you that you are a bad person for this. Get rid of your current social circle, cut out toxic people, and temporarily become a lone wolf that focuses on nothing but work.

Build momentum with your good habits, work, and learn on your mistakes. After a year or two of staying committed to the journey, you will reach your destination and create a better life for yourself. While most people you knew will fail and waste their life, you will achieve new heights and overcome your past fears.
